At the hour of China's Xia, Shang, and Zhou traditions, it addressed a different old bronze-using society which — following its halfway Sinification — became referred to by the Chinese as Shu.[31][32] Shu was vanquished by Qin in 316 BC and the settlement was re-established by the Qin general Zhang Yi. (A Chinese legend makes sense of the town's epithet "Turtle City" by guaranteeing Zhang arranged the course of his city walls by following a turtle's tracks.) Even though he had contended against the intrusion, the settlement flourished and the extra assets from Sichuan empowered the Principal Sovereign of Qin to bring together the Fighting States which had succeeded the Zhou.

Consequently, Chengdu has turned into an uncommon city in China and the world that has not changed its name since its foundation. Certain individuals believe that Chengdu is a literal interpretation of old Shu place names.
